Funlympics 2008 – bigger and better than ever!

posted Jul. 01 2008
Piggy-backing on the larger-than-normal turnout expected last year, committee members are planning in advance for a big turnout this summer. While a last-minute downpour kept some of last year’s attendees away, SACPAS Funlympics Committee volunteers say they will be ready and willing to entertain, feed and outfit for back-to-school supplies at least 400 kids.

This is where the members of the San Antonio CPA Society come in – your donations of money, school supplies, food and time are essential to the successful running of this half-day event for several hundred disadvantaged children from throughout Bexar County. Each year since 1984, SACPAS volunteers have sponsored Funlympics, combining games, friendly athletic contests, prizes for all, food and entertainment into one big back-to-school motivational event.

This year’s co-chairs, Tracy Johnson and Lynn Kupper, urge SACPAS members to get out and have fun at Funlympics on July 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Peter-St. Joseph Children’s Home, 919 Mission Road across from Mission Concepcion. At least 250 volunteers are needed to lead games and activities, prepare and serve the cook-out lunch and hand out backpacks stuffed with school supplies. Families (age 14 and older, please), friends and co-workers are welcome to join in the Funlympics fun.

For more information and to volunteer your time and energy for this special day, contact the SACPAS office at (210)828-2722, toll free (888)828-8680 or info@sacpasociety.com. Tax-deductible donations to the San Antonio CPA CE Foundation to help defray expenses are also encouraged and can be mailed to 901 NE Loop 410, Suite 420, San Antonio, TX , 78209, or made online at www.sacpasociety.com through the CPA Store’s Merchandise & Donations.

Jr. Duel in Ol' San Antonio

posted Jul. 01 2008
Twelve San Antonio-area schools are ready to face off in the first-ever Jr. Duel in Ol’ San Antonio. Now all that’s needed to move this personal finance case high school competition to the next level are San Antonio CPA Society volunteers.

Modeled after the successful Duel in the Desert, a project of the University of Arizona to teach financial literacy at the college level, Jr. Duel’s objective is to stimulate, teach, reinforce and provide long-term knowledge and practical personal financial skills to Texas high school students, conjunction with the personal finance education now mandated by the State of Texas.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the high schools represented by the top teams during a finals competition to take place on February 28, 2009. Various personal financial modules will be covered each month during the academic year, leading up to a case study, from which the finalist teams will be announced.

According to Financial Literacy Committee member and Jr. Duel coordinator Don Crane, schools currently registered include
Academy of Careers and Technology Charter High School
Brackenridge High School
Business Careers High School
Clark High School
Clemens High School
Crystal City High School
Holmes High School
Jay High School
O’Connor High School
Stevens High School
Taft High School
Warren High School

Volunteers are needed to provide classroom instruction to Jr. Duel participants, using High School Financial Planning Program materials from the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE). The Texas Credit Union Foundation is sponsoring a training session on Friday, July 18, at Generations Federal Credit Union (formerly San Antonio City Employees FCU), 6000 NW Loop 410 between Bandera and Ingram roads. The training runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is provided at no cost; however, preregistration is required. For more information and to register for the NEFE training session, go to www.tcuf.coop or call (469)385-6448.

Major sponsor of Jr. Duel is Randolph*Brooks Federal Credit Union. Other sponsors include Frost Bank, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Northwest Vista College and The Financial Planning Association of San Antonio & South Texas.

For more information and to volunteer, please contact SACPAS executive director Donna Wildey at donna@sacpasociety.com, (210)828-2722 or toll free (888)828-8680.
